Cosméceutiques vs Cosmétiques

Cosméceutiques vs Cosmétiques

FreiHaut Cosmetics one of the high quality cosmeceutical brands in Spain and the world.

But, What are cosmeceuticals and what is the difference between cosmetics and pharmaceutical skin care products?

The word "cosmeceuticals" is derived from the words "cosmetics" and "pharmaceuticals" that we know. These are products that simultaneously improve appearance and combat skin problems from the inside.

The term was coined in the 1960s. Tanning became fashionable in America, but no one thought about the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. After a while, people began to have wrinkles and dryness as well as a tanned complexion.

Dermatologist Albert Kligman began experimenting with retinoic acid to solve this problem. This is the form of retinol (vitamin A) best absorbed by the skin. Retinol regulates the sebaceous glands, accelerates cell renewal and increases skin elasticity. Noticing these properties, Kligman suggested using retinoic acid to restore skin after sunburn. He called the resulting product "cosmeceutical".

The main difference between cosmetics and cosmeceuticals:

Cosmetics:

  • Only masks skin imperfections and has a temporary and superficial effect.
  •  Cosmetics do not penetrate beyond the epidermis, which means that they do not affect the problems of dermal structures, such as loss of turgor or pigmentation.

Cosmeceuticals:

  • Cosmeceuticals penetrate into the dermis and affect the biochemical processes inside it. This is due to the complex composition of cosmeceuticals.
  • They contain AHA and BHA acids, vitamins and vitamin-like substances (including retinoids), peptides, protein compounds, etc. They never contain antibiotics or hormones.
  • The compositions or production technologies of cosmeceuticals are patented. Their production is the result of many years of hard work – testing, scientific research, clinical laboratory trials.
  • The production of cosmeceuticals is a much more complex and expensive process than that of cosmetics.

Although cosmeceuticals affect cellular structures, their components are not absorbed into the blood. Therefore, it cannot be considered a pharmacological product.
